Welcome to JADE, Australia’s best legal research platform. This clip will show you how to do your first search using the omni-box and the advanced search tool. While you may be familiar with searching, JADE adds time saving features you need to know about.

The Omnibox
If you’re one of the several billion people who use Google or another search engine on a daily basis, you will have no problem using the omnibox. Simply start typing in a case citation or name of an Act you want see and select the version you want from the drop down. You can also just press enter to do a keyword search and you will see a list of documents that contain them. Remember, the omnibox dropdown lets you nagivate directly to the version of a document that you want, AND lets you do a keyword search.

JADE Browse Screen
This JADE Browser screen is where you can work with search results, the most recent HCA judgments are displayed by default, but however you can select and filter judgments by a number of different criteria, legislation by legislature or your own content.
Advanced Search
You can also use the advanced search feature to look for more niche documents which fit a specific set of search terms.
You can always find advanced search button in the menu next to the omnibox.
Advanced Search is where JADE sets itself apart. If you do a full text search of the whole document without setting any additional criteria, you will often get too many results to review efficiently. Use the additional tools in advanced search to narrow your results down to the legal principle and details that are specific to what you need.
Refine Searches
Use the Refine Search Results panel on the left. Try the filter by date and search within results keyword search to narrow things down and see the best results.
In Document Searching
Once you have decided to review a single document, use the search located on the left panel, add as many search terms as you like, and click show in document to see a summary of the words and phrases you are looking for.
